I don’t know about you, but when I decided to go to Chinese medical school, my family thought I was crazy. They didn’t think this was “real” medicine. They said I was wasting my time. That I just needed to finally get out of school and do something with my life and get a job.

But I used this as motivation. I wanted to show them and myself that I had made a good choice and that I could help people and make a difference, that I could use my education and that the years of school and training had all been worthwhile.

Today it struck me that I was not alone. I discovered that a world famous chef, Niki Nakayama, owner of the world famous “n/naka” restaurant in Los Angeles had faced the same disbelief.

She was originally told she couldn’t be a chef by a chef/restaurant owner that she worked for. He didn’t think she could do it … and even made fun of her. Not only did she become a chef, she went on to become a world-class chef with her own restaurant and was even featured in a Netflix documentary series entitled “Chef’s table”

Niki said there’s even a special word in Japanese that is for “when someone puts you down or says you can’t do something and you then have a burning desire to prove them wrong.”

Moon Magnetizing Talk to Bring in New Patients

Feel the blood moon last night?  Are you telling your patients about impending celestial events and how and why it may affect them?  Prepare them for full moon and other astrological events like eclipses.  It both affects your practice and their health.  There’s no better way to build authority which builds their confidence and trust in you which, in turn, naturally builds your practice.

You don’t have to “sell” what you do!!  But you do have to attract your patients.  There is a BIG difference!  Selling is a yang activity, but attracting is a yin endeavor.

The “sun” of your practice, i.e. the yang, the energy for growth, is driven by your authority, your presence with your patients and prospective patients you meet in the world at events,presentations or just at the dentist.  It is this yang energy that creates an energetic field around you that attracts patients.

You never have to sell.

You simply present yourself as a knowledgeable authority.

You attract your patients with your knowledge, skills and compassion… BUT, you have to attract by being active and vocal about your knowledge, skills and compassion.  In other words, you have to manifest and put into action each of these areas of your abilities that you possess.

You can’t practice and hone your acupuncture skills, until you have proven your Chinese Medical and scientific knowledge to your prospective patients.  That means speaking!  So, speak up!!

East Meets West

One of the best ways to prove your knowledge to your prospective patient is to make Eastern and Western connections understandable to them.  You have an entire medical system you have been highly trained in.  By simply talking about and explaining the information in simple terms a 6th grader could understand, you demystify and therefore remove the “fear” factor that many people have.  We’re all afraid of the unknown. So, make the unknown known.

Here is a profound way to engage them in their health and prove your profound knowledge base so they actually ask for your help with their health.

I’ll never forget when I first made the connection.  I had a patient I had been treating for severe insomnia that had been longstanding for over a decade.  Her sleep improved month after month to the point that she could finally reliably both go to sleep and stay asleep, but I was frustrated when, at that point, she would come in for a consult with me stating, “I just had one or two nights where I had trouble sleeping in the last month.”  I’m nothing if not highly “Type A”, so I was annoyed at this situation and replied, “I thought that happened last month as well.”  She looked at me and thought for a moment, “I think you’re right, I really can’t remember.”

So, I combed her chart for the next half hour and started noticing that over the last few months her sleep had indeed been interrupted for a couple of nights every month!  So frustrating!!  What was it?  So, I thought, the most likely explanation was something happening on monthly basis.  I took that idea one step further, thinking, well, even though she was no longer menstruating, we know from medical research that hormones still cycle every month and are driven by the moon.

The moon drives all the tides on the planet.  Any seaman “worth his salt” (pun intended!) will tell you they watch the skies for monthly cycles and astrological effects, because of the profound effect on wind and water, due to the effects of the moon’s gravitational pull on fluids.  The movement of wind and water are then responsible for all tides on the planet which drive the movement of fish.  A seaman must know where to find the fish they’re after, but also how his sea craft will be affected by the wind and tides to ensure a safe trip out and back from the sea.

We also know that the movement of water drives the wind across the planet, for as water moves, it displaces the air and so the air moves producing wind.

We know that hormones that produce the ability to menstruate are also fluids, although thicker, and are therefore affected by the moon as well.  This is why humans have noticed for thousands of years that women will generally menstruate together and on the new moon.  This is the most yin moon and menstruating is a yin event.  Similarly, a healthy woman should ovulate on the full moon since it is the most yang moon and ovulating is a yang event.  This matches what we know from science, i.e. that there is a distinct shift of hormones right at ovulation and at menstruation.

Therefore, it is the waxing and waning of the moon

that drives all the tides,

including the internal tides of fluids, in the form of thick, viscous hormones

that drive the menstrual cycle.

But, science also tells us we have not only monthly cycles of hormones, but daily cycles of hormones.  Every night there is a surge of hormones for sleep and quiet and stillness.  They are primarily estrogens.  Every day, there is a surge of hormones for energy, strength and warmth.  Examples of these are testosterone and cortisol.  They wake us up and prepare us for activity.

This is the perfect way to discuss yin and yang.  Everyone understands the sun and moon and that they cycle.  Just use this very basic understanding of the basis of our existence as humans to discuss the tenets of Chinese Medicine.  It was simply through recognizing and utilizing this concept of cycling that the very foundation of Chinese Medicine was formed.

Sun is yang and moon is yin , so what is a full moon?  It is a MORE yang moon than a new moon and what happens when there is more yang at night?  You don’t sleep as well.   Sleep requires yin.

Well, I reasoned, if menstruation is a yin activity driven by the monthly cycle of the moon and sleep is a yin activity, driven by the daily cycle of the moon, then it must be that sleep would be interrupted if the moon were less yin, i.e. during a full moon.

Voila!!

So, sure enough, as I went back through my patient’s chart and correlated her 1 or 2 days of poor sleep with the waxing and waning of the moon, guess what I found??  Yes.  The only days she was not sleeping well were exactly the day before and day of the full moon!!  I’ve since tested this over the years with hundreds of patients, and of course it mainly affects women, since we are more “yin,” and absolutely and reliably you can see that even women who normally sleep soundly will be or can be affected by  the full moon and will sleep less well.  What to do??  Increase the point selection to nourish yin and/or add or increase botanicals to nourish yin and decrease deficient heat.

Not only has this knowledge improved my skills as a clinician, but it has impressed those I speak to at booth events or presentations and in my office speaking to prospective patients.  This is a major reason for the success of my practice.

Are you a Medical DETECTIVE??

Many of you have asked me why my practice has been so successful.

Here’s reason #1:  I’M A MEDICAL DETECTIVE!

You can be too!  Relentlessly hunt down the root cause of your patient’s symptom and don’t just treat the symptom …

ROOT IT OUT!  

You can IMPLEMENT this TODAY for greater understanding of your patient’s health and therefore improved diagnosis and treatment… and BUILD YOUR BUSINESS!

Your patient comes to you concerned about a particular symptom, generally pain, and so you ask, “How badly does it hurt?”  They reply, “oh, it’s not too bad, but I’m tired of it since it’s been for several weeks now.”  And so you finish talking with them after discussing a few other questions you have on their health in general so you can give them a treatment. Right?

MAYBE

Did you ask them if they’ve ever had that symptom before?  And, if so, did you ask when it first started?  It’s easy to get involved in deciding the pathology involved and therefore come up with a diagnosis so that you can determine the point prescription to help them today.  But, are you really offering them your BEST?  Are you being fair to them or their budget?

WHY, WHY, WHY??

What if you spent more time reaching back into their past with them to find out why this symptom first began?  If there was no acute trauma, then why??  Frequently I have found that current pain only exists against a backdrop of historical pain…the same pain that has come and gone for years, even a decade or more. The best course of action to take for your patient is to diagnose WHY it originally began.  It’s actually far less important why it has come and gone for years or even that they have it now, since it’s almost always because the original reason it began has never been corrected.

SO FIX IT!

And I don’t mean just their current symptom.  I’m referring to the root of the current “branch.”  Spend the time with your patient to critically analyze WHY it first started and talk your patient through the steps it took to arrive at their current pain. They need to understand and you’ll find they want to understand.

Let them know that it has been “coming and going” because the body has attempted to deal with the original problem, but either does not have the energy (which could be from Qi deficiency or yang deficiency) to sustain Qi flow and prevent pain or the original blood stagnation that occurred has never been fully resolved, and that, in order to avoid another decade like the last, they need to resolve the original problem or the Qi and Yang deficiency that does not allow for it to STAY healed.

SAVE YOUR PATIENT’S MONEY!

So, WRITE out a PLAN letting them know how many treatments it will take to resolve the symptom currently and for the long-term.  Let them know you don’t want them wasting more money for another ten years trying to solve the same problem over and over.  Tell them the best way to SAVE MONEY is to spend it now and over the next few months to follow your plan to actually SOLVE THE PROBLEM!

People often think about how much our care costs, but ask them to calculate what they’ve spent over the last decade to RE-solve the same problem over and over with just a bandaid, when the real problem continues to fester underneath?!  It will make them stop and think and it should make you stop and think.

I know you want to care for their budget as well as their pain, but are you really helping either if you don’t offer the real solution that stops the pain and the budget leak that continues to drip year after year??

FIX IT ALREADY!!

 The amazing thing about this type of investigation is that it yields results and is a “Win Win” for everybody.

  • You deliver the best care possible for your patient
  • They are eternally grateful that you took the time to solve the problem and help them understand why no one else could
  • They refer all their best friends and family members to show their appreciation for their results
  • YOUR BUSINESS GROWS THROUGH THE ROOF!!

REMEMBER, you don’t need to see a lot of patients, you just need to fully offer your best, most profound care by conducting a thorough investigation and writing a plan and explaining to them the VALUE of actually solving the problem!  I can’t tell you how many patients told me they didn’t have the money, only to find that when I took the time to fully discover and explain to them what had happened to their bodies to create the current symptoms and what needed to be done to actually solve the root and branch, they suddenly discovered they DID have the money.

The difference??

Once they understood what was happening and why and that I KNEW why (because they had asked many care providers before to no avail), the funds were suddenly available, no questions asked.  No problem.  BUT, it had to be worth it.

Brilliant Brochures that Bring ‘Em In

 

There’s a WHOLE lot around designing a brochure and YES, they’re super important!!  

So, for now the first step to take in that direction is going to be to create a more expansive version of your business card.  A solid brochure should include

  • a  couple of key study’s synopsis,
  • your specialty (yes, you should specialize!)
  • photo of your sunshiny face
  • At least 3 pics of your target market:  a woman in her 40s or 50’s. (60% of those choosing acupuncture are female and women are responsible for 80% of all household expenditures)

It should be a tri-fold with the very back side giving the key information of why you’re fabulous with your training, results and your brief story of why you decided to study Chinese Medicine…basically positioning you as THE SUPER STAR YOU ARE!!!

Switching gears and ramping back up/opening up at another location. Don’t kid yourself…YOU ARE LOSING A LOT OF ENERGY AND FOCUS!

Drive NEW Patients Into Your PRACTICE!

The Dangerous Trend that Most Acupuncturists are Incorporating into Their Websites that is Dramatically Limiting Their Business Success and Keeping Them Frustrated and Exhausted from their Ineffective Efforts!

As I’ve talked with a number of Acupuncturists and reviewed their websites, I’ve noticed this startling trend and don’t think many have thought about the implications.

PERSONAL SERVICE
Chinese Medicine is absolutely, heart and soul, about people. You don’t use gadgets to measure and weigh. Instead you pay attention to how your patient looks, the quality, volume and texture of their voice, their coloration, movement, etc. You don’t simply collect a patient’s information for documentation purposes. Instead, you carefully read what is and isn’t said and then review all of the nuances with them.

YOUR FIRST DATE
Do you remember the first date you had with someone? How did that happen? Did you ask them or did they ask you out by calling and leaving a message by voicemail where you then responded, also by leaving a voicemail? No. That would seem very alien and cold, not to mention weird! Because starting this new adventure was personal and you were possibly starting an entire relationship, the question was best asked in person. It’s always best asked in person! Don’t let a machine get in the way.

YOU’RE BEING ASSESSED
Yet this is exactly the scenario when you have online booking of appointments. A prospective person first has to decide whether or not to venture into your office and regardless of how good your website is and how fabulous you are with social media, YOU and THEY are still people! DON’T LET MACHINES GET IN THE WAY! It may be old-fashioned, but a new person wants to hear your voice, assess your professionalism (or your staff’s) and decide if they like your personality and communication skills. Of course, ultimately, they’re beginning the initial assessment of whether or not YOU CARE and can help them.

Since the new patient can’t obtain this experience by booking an appointment online… Guess what? THEY DON’T! They do not choose to book an appointment and move on to someone else’s website or just decide the whole thing was a bad idea and put off getting their first treatment indefinitely. Oooh, bad outcome for both of you. I can’t tell you how many patients came into my office

So, GET RID OF ONLINE BOOKING!

Finding Your Pizza Place

Think about the last time you wanted to find an Italian restaurant that had really good wood-fired pizza.  What did you do?  You probably just Googled the city name and “pizza,” right?  So, you likely got annoyed when names like Mario’s and La Traviatta came up.  First of all, they likely have pizza since they came up under this search, but are they wood-fired?  Also, if you drove by these businesses, would you even be certain, based on the name, if they served pizza at all??  Mario’s could be a shoe shop/cobbler.  LJune 24 2014 download 028a Traviatta might be a music shop!  So, how do you find what you’re looking for??

You’re patients are experiencing the same thing!  So, it’s VERY IMPORTANT to name your business based on what your prospective patient is looking for. This really can not be overstated.  If you have a name like “Whooping Crane Healing”, what does that say to people who are looking for you?  What does the word Healing refer to specifically and do I want that?  Is this an addiction counseling business or a Bird Sanctuary or Veterinarian that specializes in birds??  Seriously!

Location, Location, Location!

So, what is your patient looking for??  Obviously, if searching on line, your patient is definitely looking for you, based on location.  So, you must have the city name or your specific areas’ name, i.e. the name by which everyone calls a specific region of a city.  Here in Austin, most everyone knows where the Hyde Park area or SoLa areas are, so those would make it easy for someone to both know the city and more specific location within the city that your business is located in and whether or not your proximity works for them or if you’re an hour away given traffic.

What are Your Patients Searching For?

The good news is that you are a Chinese Medical practitioner, UBER capable and knowledgeable abouC in Dispensary2t an entire Chinese Medical SYSTEM!  WoWW!!!  You know acupuncture, you know herbs, you have learned to apply Chinese Medical diagnosis and understand the interconnectedness of organs and channels, you can help your patients with food and lifestyle choices, you can resolve a multitude of symptoms and prevent pathologies your patients don’t even realize are in process and you can treat ALL of these just with moxa alone if you have focused your skills in this area and…  the…  list… goes… on… and…  on…  and on….

But…  Guess what your prospective patients know about you?  About the Chinese Medical system??

ACUPUNCTURE IS FOR PAIN.  

yUP!  tHAT’S IT!!

So, guess what they’re searching for??  Acupuncture and pain.  OK.  It’s painful, but true.  So, we have to work with this. One of my coaches said a phrase that I found to be very powerful, “You have to give them what they WANT, so you can give them what they NEED.”  Since your patients only know Acupuncture and that it’s for pain and the vast amount of research supporting Acupuncture is for its use for pain, AND given that you are now aware that your patients are searching these parameters…

Your Business name equation has to read:  Location + Acupuncture + Pain + Medicine 

I know.  It’s not creative.  It’s not sexy.  It’s not sultry like “Whooping Crane Healing Center,” but it works.  Would you rather help people or have a sexy name??  REMEMBER!!  THE NAME IS NOT FOR YOU!! This is for your patient.  This is to build a bridge from them TO YOU!  They need a route, an access point and this is the point of entry that they are searching for!

A CLEAR CHOICE FOR SUCCESS

The choice is really that clear.   How about “Round Rock Acupuncture Pain Management?”  or “Waco Acupuncture Back Pain Medical Center”  or “Missoula Acupuncture Sleep Center” or “Zimbabwe Acupuncture Pain Medicine.”  Yes, you can also specialize and it’s highly recommended!!  DON’T WORRY!  You will NOT be locked into only treating pain, sleep or low back pain, etc. because as a specialist, people assume you have mastered the basics and will come to you for your help with ALL areas of their health.  Google your area or city name and pain and see how the Western Medical pain centers and doctors name their practices and just do a variation on that them.  THIS IS WHAT YOUR PROSPECTIVE PATIENTS KNOW!  This is what they have seen and expect from a medical professional….YOU ARE A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL!

Additionally, once they see you for their specific condition you specialize in, they will trust you to help with the other areas that you long to treat and know they need, so they can continue with care for months and years which allows you to do your best and deepest work and achieve a level of satisfaction for both your patient and yourself you only dreamed of!!

You get the picture!  And guess what?  Now it’s easy to market, the message is clear, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) words come easily and your website, blog, etc. quickly moves up in the rankings on searches so that you’re listed far above Whooping Crane Healing Center.”

Your whole reason to exist as a practitioner is to help people, so they are our business jing, but I’m willing to bet that virtually none of you have an email list of current patients, much less prospective patients, that you actively communicate with so they get to know you and feel comfortable with you and Chinese Medicine in general.

LANDING PAGE to REACH YOUR IDEAL PATIENTS

So,It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL that you have a Landing Page on your website that offers a free gift of information, etc. so that you can already begin to help them and offer value in exchange for their email address. This then gives you the ability to email them with more free tips on health and lifestyle and diet so they get to know you and “try before you buy.”

A great place to start is with the company Leadpages (no, I have no stake in the company!).  They have tested templates so that you get to choose from templates that are actually successfully interesting the highest percentage of people.  A good template may interest 60-80% of people versus only 20-30% of people, thereby doubling the number of people you can reach.  I also like them in particular since they have weekly live tutorials to walk you through all the steps necessary to set up your landing page and start reaching all the people that need you.  FORGET THE FLYER!!

Your email list is everything and far better than a flat website, giving you the ability to engage/interest them over time, provided you offer them your expert knowledge in a tantalizing way.

Solution to a Slow Schedule

Power UP THIS WEEK with this SUPER EASY SOLUTION to the Winter Practice Doldrums!!

Ok, I know. It’s cold out and your patient schedule is as cold as the temperatures outside. How to solve this lull in business and get back to loving what you do… helping people who need you! Here’s an absolutely successful solution that can yield 50x the investment! (Ours literally paid for itself in the first month and then brought in 50x what we paid…just in the first year!)  The sandwich board.

People generally like sandwich board signs because they’re nostalgic which provides a sense of comfort in a world gone “web wild” and electronic versus the old days of personal, written text on a tangible surface.  Additionally, it says you’re likely a local business owner and is a very personal statement of who you are and what your business is about.  It might not be the most elegant communication tool, but it IS very effective, IF and ONLY IF you do it right. Here’s a few tips that can make all the difference.

  1. Color – Ever think about why stop signs are red and yield signs are yellow?  These are two colors which are very easy download Aug 31 022to see against most backgrounds and immediately impact us as humans with a visual emphasis to our physiology.  A picture’s worth a thousand words, right?  That’s because we are visually oriented.  Especially in winter, when everything is dark and grey, pick red and or yellow.  Yellow in particular stands out against a grey winter background and has the additional benefit of making us feel sunshiny and happy…think summer sun and flowers!!
  2. Size – Check your local laws about size and then get the largest sign allowed.  It’s best if the top comes to waist or slight higher to more easily catch your eyes.  Make sure  to check into how much of the sidewalk the sign can encompass and that there is plenty of room for people to pass by.  There’s nothing worse than having the unintended consequence of irritating the very people you want to intrigue!
  3. Center translucent panel for customized inserts – Make sure to request a center panel with a side entrance so that you can change it out every week to announce events, presentations, etc.  This is WHERE THE REAL MAGIC HAPPENS!!
  4. NEVER advertise, like we did, “FREE Health Screening.”  This is far too bland and although ours was quite successful, people have changed and I know you can be more successful!  People are far more jaded with marketing and want to see an exact picture of themselves in your marketing or you’ll never see them in your practice.
  5. Personalize and be SPECIFIC  with your message – Far better, is to have the insert read with a very specific symptom and personalize the message, as if speaking to only one person, as in, “Solve Your Low Back Pain Today”.  That way, as the person with low back pain walks by, they think, “wow, that’s me and I would like to start solving it today!”  Most people realize that it won’t be actually solved that day, but that they would be taking the first step to actually reaching that goal.
  6. GET A MOVE ON!  That is, move the sign.  Don’t make the mistake of placing it in the same spot every day.  After a few days, especially weeks, of people passing by, they get used to it and will no longer “see” it.  So, keep them guessing.  We frequently moved ours to the end of the block and had inserts that included an arrow pointing the direction to our practice.

P.S.  ALWAYS  ask every new patient how they found out about you!  This is pure gold.  You MUST know what marketing is and isn’t working.  Typically 80% of your revenue is only from 20% of what you do, so make sure to identify the 80% and do MORE of it!!  and don’t waste your time and money on the 20%!!
